Figure A

  • When staining knobs for drawers or cabinet doors, keep your fingers clean by inserting a screw into the knob (figure A). Just hold on to the screw while painting on stain, or go straight to the source and dunk the knob in the can of stain. Hang the knobs from a piece of string until dry.

Figure C
  • Store cans of spray paint in a transparent shoe organizer (figure B). Just hang the organizer on a door or wall, and now it's easy to grab just the right color.

  • Use a length of a gutter downspout to organize dowels and scraps of molding (figure C). Mount about a two-foot length of downspout to the wall and drop in dowels.

  • Some epoxies have to be mixed before use. Make mixing easy by squirting the components into a plastic sandwich bag and squeezing the bag until everything's well mixed. Cut off a corner of the bag and use it as a glue dispenser.

  • Use old paintbrushes to spread glue by simply trimming off the bristles so that they are stiff enough to spread glue.

  • Keep safety glasses at hand in the workshop by purchasing a sunglasses holder at an auto-parts store. These come with an adhesive pad holder. Just attach to the workbench and drop in the safety glasses.

  • Wrap a piece of rubber shelf liner around a screwdriver to make the tool easier on your hand.

  • Protect a shop calculator from dust and dirt by wrapping it in plastic wrap.
