Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-446 -- More Projects »
Professional organizer Linda Koopersmith shows how to make the smallest room in the house--the bathroom--clutter free.

  • Do not start on the countertops! Start in the drawers first. Once those are organized, move to the counter.

  • Does the inside of this drawer look familiar (figure A)? Fortunately (or unfortunately), this drawer has to be emptied. Use organizational cosmetic containers or even small boxes to place the cosmetics accordingly. Place the containers back into the drawer and see how the drawer takes on a completely new look. It's one you will enjoy waking up to in the morning (figure B).

  • With the room leftover from organizing the drawers, it's time to take care of the cabinets (figure C). This is a great time to find repeat purchases. It will save you time and money to see what you have so you won't continue to buy it. Begin to put things away that were on the countertops. A wonderful organizer is one that swings out to utilize the space around the pipes and eliminate the clutter that occurs on the countertop surface (figure D).

  • If pressed for space when storing towels, consider a space-saving towel rack that clips right over the back of the bathroom door.

  • Transform the dead space over a toilet by adding a stacked cabinet to store some of those items that have been kept under the sink.

  • Part of the solace of a hotel shower is that there aren't a myriad of bottles stacked in the corners. Consider installing a shower dispenser right on the wall to dispense liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner and eliminate all of that clutter (figure E).

  • Now that the bathroom is better organized, you have some room to add some decorative touches such as potpourri (figure F). Not only will your bathroom feel more comfortable and look great, but it will also smell great.
