Figure D
Susan Pickering Rothamel of US ArtQuest tells how to create a decorative lampshade with art paper.

Materials:

craft knife
old lampshade
cardboard tubes, straws or sticks
ruler
wire
hot-glue gun and glue sticks
newsprint paper
art papers
scissors
rubber stamp
tinted ink pad
small dipper
embossing powder
heat gunglue tape
trim paper
mica tiles

Steps:

  1. Use a craft knife to cut the square lampshade off the old frame.

  2. Measure and cut a cardboard tube or straw to fit the corners of the lampshade frame.

  3. Thread wire through the tubes so that a couple of inches of wire sticks out at each end. Add a dab of hot glue to hold the wire inside. Let dry.

  4. Twist the ends of the wire to attach the ends of the tube to the top and bottom of the shade frame (figure A). Repeat for all four corners. Apply a dab of hot glue at the corners to hold down the wire (figure B).

  5. Use an old shade as a pattern and draw a template on newsprint paper. Cut out newsprint slightly larger than the lampshade because the finished paper will have to wrap around the frame.

  6. Trace newsprint template onto art paper of choice (figure C). Cut out.

  7. Stamp the design onto art paper with rubber stamp and ink. Before the ink dries, use a small dipper to sprinkle embossing powder onto the design. Let dry, then shake off the excess powder.

  8. Use a heat gun to set the embossing powder on the design. (A blow dryer is not hot enough.)

  9. Use the craft knife to cut out portions of the design, making holes in shade.

  10. Apply glue from glue tape (figure D) around the top and bottom of the shade and wrap the shade onto the frame.

  11. Use glue tape to apply trim paper as desired.

  12. If desired, glue mica tiles onto the design so that light shows through the tiles.
