Figure C

Organizational expert Pam Hix shares tips on new uses for old things.
  • Buttons can be used as substitutes for lost game pieces, such as checkers (figure A).

  • Use an old cutlery tray for organizing pens and markers in a desk drawer (figure B).

  • Cleaned-out paper milk cartons are great for storing delicate items, especially out-of-season items such as holiday ornaments and vases. Wash the carton thoroughly, wrap the item or items in bubble wrap and place in the carton and staple it shut (figure C). Be sure to label the carton.

  • Computer mouse pads can be used in the craft room as a base for making precise cuts. A mouse pad also works well as an oversized coaster.

  • Set a hot pan on buttons, and they work as a trivet to protect a delicate surface.

  • Old vases make great storage containers for pens and pencils, kitchen utensils or cosmetic brushes.

  • Use old shower-curtain rings in the closet. Just hang them over a clothes hanger and use to hold other items.

  • If an old wire hanger gets bent out of shape, use it to hold a strappy dress. Just bend the ends upward to keep the dress from sliding off the hanger.

  • An old muffin tin makes a great snack bin.

  • Place coffee filters between dishes and cookware when packing away for storage to help prevent scratches.
