Homemade Paper
Materials:
1-1/2 cup newspaper strips
glass jar
1 cup warm water
wooden spoon
blender
3 Tbs. cornstarch
1/2 cup water
tin screen (available at hardware stores)
cookie sheet
Steps:
- Fill a glass jar with newspaper strips, then add warm water. Stir with a wooden spoon so that the strips are completely saturated.
- Set aside for three hours, stirring occasionally.
- Pour the contents of the jar into a blender. In a separate container, mix cornstarch and water, stir well, then add this mixture to the blender.
- Blend contents of blender, then pour the mixture over a piece of tin screen, such as an old window screen, that is resting on a cookie sheet.
- Pat the mixture down across the screen as thinly as possible. Set out in sunlight until dry. The result will be an egg carton-type material that can be used in children's crafts.
Other Ideas
- If you want fruit to ripen quickly, wrap it in newspaper or a paper bag. Check back after it has been wrapped for a day.
- If plastic food canisters are retaining odors, place wadded newspaper in the canister and seal. The newspaper will absorb the odors.
- Stuff moist, smelly shoes with newspaper to absorb odors and moisture. Check the shoes the following day.
- Shredded newspaper makes a great cat-box filler in an emergency situation.
