Crafty mom Mary Lyon shows how to create useful crafts out of extra compact discs.CD Photo Frames
Hang pictures of family, friends and the pets from CDs. Use metallic pipe cleaners to secure the CDs to each other through the center hole by twisting and linking. Glue a picture to the center of each side with a hot-glue gun (figure A).CD Desk Caddy
Construct a desk caddy to hold pencils, scissors, markers and other items with a CD and toilet-paper roll. Cut a section of the roll away, cover with construction paper and adhere to the disc with a hot-glue gun. Use the same concept to adhere pine cones and a small section of cardboard tube to the CD for a small potpourri holder (figure B). CD Model Car
You'll need a bunch of CDs for this one. Use a milk carton and construction paper for the body and foil that seals the top of a coffee or instant-tea can for the grill. Pencils or chopsticks can serve as the wheel axles (figure C).
Use hot glue to adhere the chopsticks to the milk carton, then secure the CD wheels to the chopsticks by gluing a paper clip to each CD. Pipe cleaners help stabilize the wheels to the carton underneath (figure D). Bottle caps, photographs and anything else you can come up with can be used to complete the model.
