Materials:
2 hinged pairs of louvered shutters (same style and size)
2 square wooden plaques
2 hinges
wood for shelves
fence post finial
drill with countersink and regular bits
wood screws
level
wood filler
sandpaper
paintbrush
white paint
Steps:
- To create the structure, bend the shutters at the hinges. Stand them upright and set both pairs together to form a square. At one corner of the structure, secure the two pairs of shutters together with the extra hinges. Leave one corner free to open and close as a door.
- Center the shutter structure on top of a square plaque that's at least three inches wider than the width of one shutter panel and trace the outline for placement .
- Indicate screw placement on the plaque, marking two evenly spaced points on each side of the traced outline (except the door side). Drill pilot holes through the plaque.
- Place the structure upside down on the floor. Turn the plaque upside down and position it. Pre-drill with countersink bit through the pilot holes on the plaque into the edge of the shutters and secure with wood screws.
- Draw diagonal lines on other plaque from corner to corner to find the center . Center the finial on top of the plaque and trace the outline. Mark placement of pilot holes on diagonal lines, about two inches from each corner of finial outline . Pre-drill holes and place top of plaque against underside of finial. Pre-drill finial through pilot holes with both bits and secure with wood screws.
- Mark hole placement for the top plaque to the shutter structure and secure with wood screws.
- Measure interior of shutter structure to determine shelf size. The width of the shelves should be equal to the width of the interior, but the shelf depth should be slightly less to allow for operation of the door. Cut shelves to size.
- Determine the shelf placement based on CD or videotape storage. Mark shelf placement on the outside of the shutter structure on each side of the louvers using a level . Pre-drill holes and secure with screws.
- Fill all holes and sand smooth when dry.
- Dip just the tip of the brush into paint and dab most off on a scrap board . With an almost dry-brush, apply paint leaving random patches of wood exposed.
