Reusing Items

Tip expert Vicki Lansky says "don't throw it out--reuse it."
- How about those little balloons that come in packages of 100? Blow one up, add some water and place in the freezer to use as a cold compress. Place it on the end of the finger to act as a waterproof adhesive-bandage protector (figure A).
Turn a coffee can into a charcoal fire starter. Remove the bottom lid so that the can is an open cylinder. Poke holes around the top and bottom with a church key (a can or bottle opener with an usually triangular head) or a hammer and nails. Set in the grill and fill with charcoal (figure B), then prepare normally. When the coals are ready, use tongs to pull away the can.
Another variation on the charcoal fire starter is to use a cardboard egg container. Do not use foam containers. Place a briquette in each egg section (figure C), close the carton, place in the grill and light.
Use film canisters to keep quarters handy for doing laundry, paying toll booths or other occasions. Cut a hole in the lid for children to use as a bank, or cut a hole in the side to use as a postage-stamp dispenser.
Turn a film canister into a fingernail polish removing kit by inserting a sponge from a hair curler. Pour nail polish remover into the canister, then insert each individual finger into the canister and twist. Place the cap on it if traveling.
Recycle newspapers by using different sections for an appropriate recipient. For example, wrap a graduation gift in the "employment" section, a child's gift with the "comics" section, etc. Spray the paper lightly with hairspray to keep newsprint from rubbing off on your skin.
