Figure A
Materials:

windows (two smaller matching windows and one longer one)
wood glue
finish nails
corner angle brackets
carriage bolts
nuts/washers
wood screws
glass piece (slightly larger than the top window)

Steps:

  1. Sand the window frame to remove any loose paint.
  2. Construct a wood frame for the larger window out of the same type of casing that is around the doors and the window in the room. Cut the corners at a 45-degree angle so that the fluting continues around the entire outer box. Use wood glue and finish nails at the corners to attach the pieces together. For added strength to hold weight, attach corner angle brackets from underneath (figure A).

Figure B
  • The larger window will become the top of the desk--if desired, leave some of the dust and old dried paint on the glass to give it shabby chic character. Attach 1" x 2" supports around the inside of the wood trim box to hold the top in place (this allows the window to nest inside the wood frame) (figure B).

    Figure C
  • At the bottom of each smaller window, create a foot or resting edge as these create the sides of the desk. Since they windows themselves are too thin to support the desktop, use the same casing to create a base for each window leg (figure C).

    Figure D
  • Attach the legs to the top frame with carriage bolts plus a nut and washer. Drill holes and push the carriage bolts through the side of the frame and legs, and then tighten with a wrench.
  • Keep the desk from twisting or moving from side to side by attaching leg supports made from the same type of casing material with wood screws (figure D).
  • Attach clear plastic pads to a piece of glass for the top to keep it from slipping .
