This tin finial once adorned the top of a row house, but now it's an interesting nightlight that would look great along a garden path.

Merry created the finial light by first marking a design of dots on the surface with chalk. Then he drilled holes in the finial and placed it over an outdoor garden light.
Artist Keith Merry joins host Renai Ellison to show how a little artistic creativity can give new life to salvaged items.

Materials:

iron bracket system to hold a pot
antique finials, mailboxes, washtub, iron window guard, part of old weathervane, architectural limestone ball, antique newel post
power drill and masonry bit

Project Ideas

  • Weld an iron bracket to a section of gutter and antique iron gate or window guard. Put flowers in the gutter to create a one-of-a-kind planter.

  • To create a finial nightlight, mark a pattern of dots with a piece of chalk, and drill the pattern with a power drill, creating openings for light to escape.

  • Put outdoor light from a hardware store under the finial to create interest in the garden or porch area. For a more romantic feel, put a candle or two under the finial instead of the electric light.

  • Add a bracket system to old iron gate and suspend small flowerpots from it.
