A purse made from ties has an artistic, vintage look that is easy to create.
Turn old neckties (perhaps sentimental favorites that belonged to a granddad) into one-of-a-kind handbags. Designer Sonya Nimri shows how.

Materials:

old neckties
sewing machine
scissors
piping
purse handle (available at most craft stores)
a button-and-loop closure (optional)
purse form

Steps:


  1. First coordinate your colors to create a pleasing mix.

  • Sew six ties together down the long side of the tie from the small end to the wide end (figure A). Overlap each tie over the next one and sew with a zigzag stitch. If desired, line the bag, but it is not necessary.

  • Fold the narrow end over on itself, wrong sides together, until you have the size you want. Cut along the edge (figure B).

  • Edge the cut part of the fabric with piping. To make the piping, use a tie remnant from which the lining has been removed. Slip the cut edge of the ties up into the remnant until it stops at the fold (like seam binding). You will have fabric on both sides of the cut edge. Sew into place.

  • Sew on a handle and a button-and-loop closure, if desired.

  • To use the bottom portion of the six ties sewn together, you will need a purse form you can cover. An inexpensive cloth purse with rigid handles was used for this project. Lay the ties over the cloth (figure C) on one side of the bag and sew in place.
