Turning an old vinyl record into a clock is an unusual way to honor someone's favorite song.

Small toys, game pieces, stones, flowers, buttons or anything else your creativity suggests can be used to mark the numbers on the clock.
Designer Sonya Nimri shows how to turn damaged CDs or old vinyl records into unusual clocks that make charming gifts.

Materials:

vinyl record
tracing paper
scissors
pencil
correction fluid
hot-glue gun
small decorative items such as rhinestones and buttons
dull, sharp-edge knife
clock mechanism

Steps:

  1. Make a template to guide the placement of the numbers on the clock. To do this, trace the record on a piece of paper, then cut it out.

  2. Fold the template in half, then again, then two more times until you have 12 folds when you open it up.

  3. Mark the record where each fold is for number placement.

  • Place the template on top of the record, fold back the template slightly (see photo at right), and make a dot on the record with correction fluid.

  • Decorate the numbers by gluing on an item at each mark. Be sure to use a low-heat glue gun so you don’t damage the vinyl. You can use rhinestones, buttons or any other small item that suit your theme.

  • To add the clock mechanism, you must first enlarge the hole in the record’s center. Push the tip of the knife into the hole and work it around, shaving off the plastic to enlarge the hole.

  • Insert the clock mechanism (available at a craft store for less than $10) through the hole. If you want to use larger hands than those that come with the kit, you can buy them separately.

  • For an unusual tribute to the words on the record, try this technique: Type the lyrics up on a colored sheet of paper, choosing a fairly small font size. Cut them out in small sizes that fit the width of clear stones. Place a dot of glue on the front of the words and press the words to the underside of the stone so they can be read through the clear stone. Glue the stone to the record to mark the numbers.

    * Note: CDs can be decorated in the same way. Just use a bead in the center hole to narrow it down to accommodate the clock mechanism.
