An old frame or chest of drawers are both good items to look for at a yard sale.

Yard-sale expert Tracy Dale provides tips on repairing and renewing yard-sale items.
  • A chest of drawers is a great thing to look for at a garage sale. Make sure it is made of wood all the way through and is structurally sound. Use a paint stripper if there is a lot of paint built up on the surface.

  • Don't worry if a piece of wooden furniture looks too rough to refinish--simply go with the theme and give it an antique look by sanding down the surface after painting.

  • If you like a chair, find that it doesn't match your decor, simply remove the seat and recover it in a matching fabric. Wrap the seat in fabric, just as you would a gift, then staple the fabric underneath.

  • If framed art or pictures catch your eye, look closely at the frame--this is the piece that can be valuable. Don't be distracted by the picture inside the frame because it will be removed. Sand and paint the frame and insert your children's artwork or a mirror in the space previously occupied by a dated print.
