Librarian Julie Boleman offers tips for making the best use of libraries.

  • Libraries are filled with much more than books. Many libraries are now multimedia centers, offering everything from books to VHS tapes to compact discs.

  • Remember, library cards are free, so all the great materials in the library are also free for you to check out and use.

  • Why pay to rent a video when you can check one out for free at your local library? All sorts of tapes are available, including documentaries, travel videos and how-to tapes.

  • Libraries also offer audio books. Check one out to listen to during your next road trip.

  • The library is also a newsstand, offering many different types of periodicals.

  • Spend a day at the library looking through the past. Many libraries have old newspapers on file on microfilm.

  • Some libraries now have their catalogs available on the Internet. Once you've found what you're looking for online, call the library to see if they'll hold the materials for you.

  • Storytime is one of the most popular features of the library. Most libraries have a scheduled children's story hour.
