Tree farmer Charles Peltzer provides tips for selecting the perfect holiday tree.
- When visiting a tree farm, keep in mind that you may cover acres of ground. Dress comfortably and ear appropriate right shoes. In other words, plan for an outdoor experience.
- A clear, blue sky makes all trees look smaller than they actually are. Be sure to have a good idea of the height and width of the area you are planning on decorating with a tree before visiting the tree farm.
- Check the needles of a tree to make sure it is fresh. If it is a fir tree, the needles should snap like a fresh carrot. If it is pine, the needles should be very flexible.
- Once a tree is selected, most people just have it strapped to the top of the car. This is bad for the tree because the wind will whip it. Tree farms love to see trees either in trunks or in cargo areas. If you must strap a tree to the top of the vehicle, ask to have it wrapped in netting and have it firmly secured. Don't forget to drive carefully.
Fast Fact
There are more than 32 million fir, pine and spruce trees grown specifically for the holiday season in the United States.
