Flea-Market Decorating
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-547 -- More Projects »
Entertaining expert Dana Christine shares ideas for turning ordinary items purchased at flea markets into wonderful treasures for the home.
- Choose unique architectural antique pieces to use as wall hangings in the home (figure A). They can also make unique garden-art or coffee-table pieces.
- Collect antique doorknobs, hooks and handles, and mount them to a board to make a unique coat or hat hanger for the home (figure B).
- Antique keys make great accessories. Hang an attractive old key on luggage to make it easy to identify when traveling. Another option is to hang the key on a chain to make a unique necklace.
- Use antique moldings as bookends, or turn the molding into shelf supports by screwing the molding ends to a board.
- Attach drawer pulls to a cutting board to transform it into a cheese board or tray.
- Old tiles make great hot plates and trivets. Place felt feet on the bottom of the tile to prevent it from scratching surfaces.
- Use a piece of slate tile as a cute message board. Write notes for the family on the tile with a piece of chalk.
- Attach two wooden picture frames with an antique hinge, then put a set of matching pictures in them.
- Use old window frames as room dividers or as wall hangings.
