Re-Framing Old Photos
Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-918 -- More Projects »
Art framer Yolanda Marshall explains how to re-frame precious old photographs.
- Use only acid-free or archival quality papers and materials next to photographs. Museum rag board, which comes in shades of white, cream, black and gray, is the best choice for safe framing.
- Do not use cardboard behind the picture because it is full of acid, which breaks down the photograph. Acid-free mat board is a much better choice.
- Masking tape is another no-no for attaching a backing to artwork. Use acid-free linen tape from an art store instead.
Be sure that the photograph never touches the glass or over time, it will stick to the glass, causing serious problems. Use spacers (see photo at right), plastic tubes that are placed on the lip of the frame to hold the photograph off of the glass. For framed pictures, the mat board will keep the print off the glass. When you buy artwork such as etchings from an antique store, be sure to check the colored mat board. If it has darkened around the inside edges, this indicates the presence of acid. Remove the mat immediately and replace it with acid-free mat board.
