Materials:

fusible webbing
iron
grommet and grommet tool
two ribbons or hem tape of the same length

Steps:

  1. Cut off the ribbing at the bottom of the sweatshirt.

Figure A
  • Find the center of the sweatshirt by measuring the distance between the armholes and marking the halfway point (figure A). Make two more center marks down the body of the shirt.

  • Cut down the center, following those three marks. Be sure you only cut the top layer, or front, of the shirt.

    Figure B
  • To get the front curve at the bottom of the jacket, measure up about four inches and pencil in a gentle curve. You might want to make a simple pattern so that each side will be the same (figure B). Flip the pattern over when you use it on the other side.

  • Cut along the pencil line.

  • To finish the front edge, iron the cut edges of the center under about 1/2 inch. Hem with fusible webbing.

  • To make closures, position two grommets on each side of the jacket (four holes total).

    Figure C
  • Thread the grommets with ribbon or tape, using one long piece of ribbon for both holes on the same side of the jacket (figure C).

  • Push the ribbon up through the holes from the inside of the jacket.
