Homemade Candles

TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-812 -- More Projects »
Craft expert Sharon Shuster explains how to make candles.

Materials:

gel wax
paraffin wax
double boiler (can make your own out of a coffee can)
candle thermometer
wax colorant
wick

Preparation:

Melt the wax by simply placing the gel wax in a large pot directly on a burner. The paraffin needs to be placed in a double boiler. Be sure to monitor both waxes with a candle thermometer to make sure they don't get above 250 degrees, which is their flash point.

To make the Cup of Cappuccino candle, pour the gel wax into a glass container. Melt in a little coloring (available at craft stores). Drop the wick in and let harden.

To get the paraffin wax to the desired texture for the whipped-cream topping, whip it with a whisk. Spoon it onto the candle. You can use any container, wick size or wax colorant. All are available at craft stores.

To make an Ice Cream Sundae candle use whipped paraffin for the ice cream, gel for the sauce, and flameproof cherries to top it off. Using these techniques, you can make any type of candle imaginable.
