Versatile Shift Dress

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-659 -- More Projects »
Looking for a versatile dress that can be worn all year and is great for travel? How about a shift dress? Introduced in 1957, the simple yet elegant shift dress was made popular by the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Audrey Hepburn.

Using the same style, taupe-colored shift dress on several models, fashion expert Kate Rice tells how to make this one, $38 dress function as office, after-hours and weekend wear.

Figure A--This model is wearing a "workday" shift dress ensemble that's perfect for the office. The dress is topped with a $58 blazer and long, leopard-print scarf. The look is completed with a faux-snakeskin purse and shoes. Get this entire outfit for less than $150, accessories included.

Figure B--This "weeknight" shift dress ensemble that has been dressed up with a vibrantly colored, embroidered sheer wrap. The outfit is accented with a light-colored metallic purse and shoes.

Figure C--This model is wearing a "work-wear" look that's a bit more casual than the earlier ensemble seen in figure A. This look was accomplished by topping the same shift dress with a peach-colored twin-set sweater combo (cardigan tied around the shoulders), which makes the dress look like a skirt. The look is finished with matching taupe-colored shoes.
