Start the approach with the predominant foot. Release the ball with the thumb at the 12 o'clock position to roll a straight ball.

Host Mary Ellen Pinkham hits the lanes to get bowling tips from expert bowler Arnie Gerdes.

  • There are four steps to a basic delivery. Determine a starting point by walking up to the foul line and turning around to face away from the pins. Take four normal strides and turn, and that's a correct starting point.

  • Adjust the starting position according to the pins that are being missed. For example, if most of the pins left standing are on the right, move your feet to the right a bit before the next delivery.

  • There's more to bowling shoes than meets the eye. The shoes are designed to help you start and stop properly. The sole of the left shoe (for a right-handed bowler) is leather to permit the slide on the last step. The sole of the right shoe is made of rubber with a leather lip that allows for traction at the start of the delivery. Left-handed bowlers' shoes are just the opposite.

  • There's a reason bowling shoes aren't stylish. The shoes are designed to be fairly unattractive so that people will not be tempted to steal them.

  • The key to choosing the correct ball is comfort. Choose a ball that you are able to grip and swing without straining. A ball that's too light or too heavy could negatively affect your game.

  • The span of the ball should fit the hand comfortably. The thumb and fingers should not stick in the holes, nor should they be too loose, which can result in a dropped ball or excessive strain on the fingers.
