Fish Piñata
Party expert Linda Morris shows how to make a pinata.

Materials:

large, round balloon (at least 12 inches in diameter)
roll of masking tape
strips of newspaper (1 to 1-1/2 inches in width)
pancake batter
string
utility knife
candies, small toys
cereal box
crepe paper
school glue
google eyes (available at craft stores)

Steps:

  1. Blow up the balloon and set it on the roll of tape to keep secure.

  2. Make pancake batter according to directions.

  3. Dip long strips of newspaper into the batter, then run the strip through fingers to remove excess. Drape strips onto the balloon--it will adhere immediately.

Figure A
  • Cover the entire balloon except for the knot. After the first layer of newspaper, tie an anchor of string around the balloon (figure A), then paper on a second layer and allow to dry overnight. Rotate as it dries.

  • The next day, pull the knot away from the hole and make a small cut. When the air begins to release, hold the knot until air dissipates, then remove the balloon. A hard shell will remain.

    Figure C
  • Cut a trap door in the top of the shell (figure B). Insert candies. Cover the cut with masking tape.

  • Cut a scale template from an old cereal box. Use a pen to outline the rounded scallops onto crepe paper. Cut out and glue to shell in rows with school glue (figure C). Add google eyes, lips or other embellishments.
