Packing for the Family
Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-528 -- More Projects »
Packing expert Anne McAlpin offers clever strategies for family packing.
- Pack one day's clothes in a large, reclosable bag (figure A). Write the children's name on top of each package so that when you're in a hurry, you can pull the bag right out and hand it off. Package beach outfits with sun block, sunglasses, a hat and other beach items to save time and stay organized.
- Another beach tip is to pack an inflatable pool. It packs flat, and when you are on the beach, bring the surf up to them in the pool instead of worrying about them. The water will be warm and the children will be close to you.
A fun tip for children is to have them create their own passport with scissors, glue and construction paper (figure B). A child can chronicle the adventure by pasting in photos and other scrapbook items.Never put your children's home address on a luggage tag. Instead, use colorful construction paper and shoelaces to create a festive tag that bears the name and phone number.Make a safety pouch for the child by attaching string to a small, plastic wallet so that it can be worn around the neck. Include a business card with the hotel address and any relevant phone numbers, in case you are separated from your child.Chocolate and juice drinks are essential for children on a trip, but things tend to get sticky. Be sure to pack moist towelettes and foods that are healthy such as water and pretzels.Be sure to fill a backpack with games and toys to keep children occupied during a long trip.
