Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-906 -- More Projects »
Creativity expert Courtney Watkins demonstrates how to make last-minute costumes with materials you probably have around the house.
Lady LibertyMaterials:
green blanket or sheet
safety pin
paper towel roll
green paint
construction paper
scissors or craft knife
plastic lid
orange tissue paper
green poster board
string
Steps:
- Wrap the child in a green blanket or sheet, securing it on one shoulder with a safety pin.
- Create the torch by painting a paper towel roll green or gluing construction paper around it.
Make an x-cut in a plastic lid and thread it over the roll (figure A). Cover the plastic with a circle of green paper (make an x-cut in its center and push down over the roll).
For the flame, stuff orange tissue paper in the end of the roll. For the crown, cut green poster board into points (figure B), and thread two pieces of string on either end through small holes.
Cardboard CowboyMaterials:
brown grocery bag
scissors
pencil
yellow construction paper
large piece of cardboard
stapler
black construction paper
Steps:
- Using a brown grocery bag, cut a large circle out the bottom, then cut up the middle on one side, creating a V as you cut up toward the top (figure C).
- Draw buttons and holes down the front.
- Make a star out of yellow construction paper.
- For the hat, cut out the shape of a cowboy hat on a large piece of cardboard and staple it at the bottom to a headband that you have made from a circle of construction paper.
- Make a mustache by folding a black piece of construction paper in half.
- Cut the edges in strips about halfway up, curl up the edges and add string on each side to tie the paper around the head.
Paper ChickenMaterials:
white garbage bag
scissors
construction paper in red, orange and yellow
tape
cardboard
childs pair of sunglasses
string
white poster board
Steps:
- Use a white garbage bag for the body of a costume.
- Cut an oval at the top for the head and an oval on each side for arm holes. Split it up the middle in the back for easy access--like a smock.
Cut construction paper into pencil-tip shapes (figure D) and tape them on the garbage bag, row by row by row. Make the mask with a piece of cardboard and use a childs pair of sunglasses for a template. Trace around the frames on the cardboard for the eyes. Add the shape of rooster feathers on top, cut it out and color. Add string for tying on the mask.
Use white poster board for the wings. Cut out two wing shapes (figure E). Cut them out and apply rows of the pencil-tip shapes. To attach, cut out two holes near the shoulder of the wing and two holes at the bottom. Thread a piece of string through each pair of holes and tie onto the childs arm.Use orange construction paper to make the feet. Trace your childs foot first, then around that draw a three-toed claw. Cut out and attach with string.
Laundry Basket KidMaterials:
laundry basket
scissors
string
safety pins
dryer sheets
Steps:
- Cut out the bottom of a laundry basket.
- Make holes in the sides and add string "suspenders" that will go over your childs shoulder and suspend the basket skirt.
- Safety pin items of clothing to their shirts and pants. Add some dryer sheets, too.
