Authors Laurie Waldstein and Leslie Zinberg show the best types of diaper bags and what items are necessities for the baby on-the-go. They also discuss seasonal changes and what information should be left with a sitter.
When you buy a diaper bag, choose one that is plastic lined and lightweight with outside pockets for those last-minute items. It should also have a sturdy shoulder strap.
Checklist for diaper bag:
- disposable diapers
- small garbage bags with twist ties for dirty diapers
- powder
- diaper rash ointment
- petroleum jelly
- diaper wipes and tissues
- bottle of formula (if bottle feeding) with protective nipple cover
- bottle of juice (six months or older) with protective nipple cover
- one to two extra nipples and covers
- tightly sealed jar of baby food and spoon (six months or older/shorter trips only)
- finger food packed in an airtight plastic bag (ten months or older/short trips only)
- bib
- pacifiers (if baby uses them)
- complete change of clothes for the baby
- sweater/jacket/hat
- lightweight blanket (can be used to cover car seat on a hot day or when changing baby in the car or over an unprotected surface)
- hypoallergenic sunscreen
* Tip: When leaving the baby with a sitter or family member, remember to leave your doctor's name and phone number, along with other emergency numbers.
Fun travel extras: toys and books, a musical tape of the baby's favorite songs or a tape of mommy and daddy's voices.
