Creativity expert Courtney Watkins teaches children the rules of the road with fun crafts.

  • Depending on the age of the child and his or her comprehension of roadway rules, shapes and colors can be a fun and beneficial project. Decide where your child fits in and find some floor space.

  • With the right amount of space, an elaborate masking-tape neighborhood can be marked off, complete with four-way intersection, crosswalks, dashes to mark lanes, and arrows to indicate direction (figure A).

  • Construction paper and felt are the main items necessary for sign construction (figure B). Children can have a ball creating their own unique animals to protect with a crossing sign. Perhaps this imaginary neighborhood needs a sign alerting people to watch out for "baby oranges" or "elves working."

  • Plungers and tape make the best road signs. This way stop signs and other important markers can be placed at the intersection so that a child on a tricycle can learn where to stop or yield, when to go forward, etc.
