Road Rules
Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-509 -- More Projects »
Creativity expert Courtney Watkins teaches children the rules of the road with fun crafts.
- Depending on the age of the child and his or her comprehension of roadway rules, shapes and colors can be a fun and beneficial project. Decide where your child fits in and find some floor space.
With the right amount of space, an elaborate masking-tape neighborhood can be marked off, complete with four-way intersection, crosswalks, dashes to mark lanes, and arrows to indicate direction (figure A).
Construction paper and felt are the main items necessary for sign construction (figure B). Children can have a ball creating their own unique animals to protect with a crossing sign. Perhaps this imaginary neighborhood needs a sign alerting people to watch out for "baby oranges" or "elves working."Plungers and tape make the best road signs. This way stop signs and other important markers can be placed at the intersection so that a child on a tricycle can learn where to stop or yield, when to go forward, etc.
