|
|
Host Sharon Anderson is joined by author and parenting expert Donna Erickson to learn how to make some creative Christmas decorations with the children. Icicle Ornaments
Materials:
pipe cleaners
pencil
string
3 Tbs. borax
1 cup water, boiling
large glass jar
Steps:
- Shape the pipe cleaner into any desired form, such as a heart, star or Christmas tree.
- Attach the pipe cleaner shape to a pencil with string.
- An adult should carefully mix borax and boiling water to create a solution that will form crystals on the pipe cleaner. Up to four cups of water will likely be needed to fill a large jar, so mix accordingly.
Dip the pipe cleaner into the solution and let sit overnight, suspended by the pencil and string (figure A). In the morning, the pipe cleaner will be transformed into a unique ornament that looks great on gift boxes or on the tree.

Friendship hearts are easy to make.
|
|
Friendship Hearts Materials:
red and green construction paper
scissors
Steps:
- Cut construction paper into strips approximately eight inches long and two inches wide. The strips should resemble a tongue depressor in shape.
- Fold the strip over and cut a slit into the middle about three inches deep.
To create one heart, you'll need two strips, one red and one green (figure B). To combine the two strips, insert one leg into the fold of the opposite strip, allowing it to overlap the second leg of that strip.Tuck the opposite leg into the first fold that was inserted. From the first strip, insert the leg into the fold that was just brought through to finish the heart shape (figure C). These are great to hang on the Christmas tree, a doorknob or to decorate gifts.
English Crackers Materials:
paper towel tubes
wrapping paper
ribbon
candy
trinkets
Steps:
- Cut the paper towel tubes in half and fill with candy and trinkets.
- Wrap in colored paper and secure each end with ribbon. Present on plates at dinner time for a festive surprise.
Ice Candles Materials:
old candles or paraffin wax
metal can
ice chunks
cardboard juice container
taper candle
candle coloring (if using non-colored candles)
Steps:
- Shave down wax into the metal container and melt using the can as a double boiler. Keep an eye on the wax because it is flammable. If using non-colored wax, add some candle coloring (available at most craft stores).
- Center a taper candle in the juice container and surround with ice.
Pour melted wax into the cardboard container, filling to the wick of the taper candle (figure D).As the wax hardens, pour out the water. In two hours, tear away the cardboard to reveal the new piece.
