Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-438 -- More Projects »
Courtney Watkins, a creativity expert, uses familiar nursery rhymes and children's characters to make gardening interesting as well as educational to children. Mary, Mary ... and Jack and the Beanstalk are stories children can relate to and associate with the garden.

Figure A
Figure A--Children can add twigs, flowers and any other natural decorations to pine cones and then be able to line up "pretty maids all in a row."

Figure B
Figure B--Children are sure to love this pine-cone project. Smear a pine cone with peanut butter and sprinkle birdseed over the surface. Run a string or ribbon through the top and hang in a tree, perhaps with a sign the child can make declaring the area a Blue Jay Café.

Figure C
Figure C--Create a scratch-and-sniff garden that is designed to teach children about gardening and their senses. An herb box is a great project to do with a child because it heightens senses of texture, tactile feeling and smell. This box contains mint, rosemary, thyme and chives. Don't let them eat something that isn't edible, however.
