Figure A

  • Stickers, festive colors, even edible glue and paint decorate this children's table (figure A). Decoration is half the battle and can go a long way toward making children feel included.

  • Set aside the same foods that are served to adults (celery and dip, fruit salad, etc.) and serve to the children in separate, festive containers. This technique allows them to create their own salad and appetizers.

Figure B
  • Colored, edible sugars can be used to decorate a plate (figure B). Pour corn syrup into a squeeze bottle, then turn children loose with the sugars and paper plates. The corn syrup can be used to draw shapes and letters, sprinkle the sugars over the corn syrup, then tilt the paper plate.

    Figure C
  • Add food coloring to pudding to use as paint on a paper plate. Use stencils with the absorbent plate and pudding (grape juice works well, too), and suddenly children will become miniature food artists (figure C).
