Family Daypack

TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-334 -- More Projects »
Organization expert Pam Hix joins TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham to explain how to prepare a daypack for a family adventure.
  • Baby wipes are a necessary item for a family daypack for cleaning big and little hands alike.

  • Always pack a first-aid kit that includes plenty of bandages, bug spray and hydrocortisone for bug bites.

  • Bring along a fleece jacket for each member of the family. Fleece will still feel warm, despite dampness, whereas a cotton jacket will just feel wet.

  • Remember to include a camera.

  • A hat and sunscreen are a necessity on a bright, sunny day. Be sure to bring along a hat for a baby because their skin is especially sensitive.

  • Don't forget a map of the area in which you are hiking. If possible, study it beforehand to get a feel for the area.

  • Check the weather report. If there is even a slight chance of rain, bring along rain gear or at least plastic garbage bags that can be made into ponchos.

  • Pack a large water bottle.

  • Take along an extra garbage bag. You can dump it in a trash receptacle as you leave the park.

  • The purpose of the family daypack is to make impromptu day trips hassle-free. It is NOT intended to replace the picnic basket, diaper bag or beach bag. It is designed to be used in conjunction with those items.

  • It is important to keep it stocked so that it is ready to take with you on last-minute outings. Here's a quick checklist to follow:

    small first-aid kit
    insect repellent and bite sticks
    sun block
    wet wipes
facial cloth in press-and-seal or zippered plastic bag
    garbage bag
    paper towels or napkins
camera and film or disposable camera
extra pair of shoes and socks for children
maps and brochures for destination ideas

  • Keep these items in the trunk of your car. This way it can also double as a mini-emergency kit for the car.
