Games That Teach Manners

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-322 -- More Projects »
Courtney Watkins offers fun ideas for instilling good dinner manners in children. She uses games and tools that children love to teach these lessons.
  • Children mimic adult behavior, so always use "please" and "thank you" in front of them.

  • Have the child bring a stuffed animal to the table and practice introductions by introducing the animal to others at the table.

  • Set up dolls at the table displaying manners that are unacceptable. Correct the dolls in front of the children.

  • Teach children correct utensil positioning by putting a knife or fork in the wrong place and test the child by asking him or her to move it into the correct position.

  • When eating soup, be sure to spoon the soup in a direction that takes it toward the center of the table.

  • Cut up a banana instead of eating it directly from the peel.
