  • Under-bed storage units (figure A) are perfect for storing little-used or out-of-season toys. Look for a storage unit with wheels on the bottom to make sliding easier.

  • Use a colorful shoe bag to organize toys on the back of a closet door (figure B).

  • Shoeboxes are useful building blocks for an entire toy storage complex. Put dolls to bed in their own shoebox bedroom. Hang doll clothes in a shoebox closet (figure C). Just poke holes in each side, then slide a rod through. Park miniature cars in the shoebox garage.

  • Always involve the child when it comes time to reorganize their room.

  • Use fun and colorful storage units.

  • Purchase a file cabinet to help your child organize and store school artwork, report cards, awards, pictures and other special mementos.

  • Place a clothes hamper in a child's room and teach them how to use it. One easy way to do this is to place a toy basketball hoop above the hamper and let the kids have fun tossing clothes into the hamper.

  • The basketball hoop trick works great for a wastebasket, too.

  • Shelves are where it's at when it comes to organizing a lot of toys. Shelving should be strong and sturdy to prevent accidents. Place open bins or clear bins with covers on lower shelves. Children can then easily find their toys without having to dig through an entire toy box.

  • Generally, toys that are carefully placed in bins will last longer than toys that are stacked in boxes.

  • A toolbox or fishing-tackle box makes a great way to inventory tiny little toys such as doll clothes, toy cars and small blocks. This also makes it easy for the toys to be transported to and from the play zone.

  • Use larger tubs to store big blocks, play dishes and train sets.

  • Rainy day got the kids inside? Let them have fun by labeling toy storage boxes with pictures cut out from magazines.

  • Hang doll clothes, sports equipment, play jewelry or stuffed animals on a coat rack or peg rack.

  • Toy hammocks are great for storing stuffed animals and dolls.
