Figure A
Figure A--For a mom who loves to read, make a bookmark with leaves and flowers that have been picked up on a nature walk. Press the leaves and flowers in a book for a few days to flatten them. Arrange them on the sticky side on a piece of transparent self-adhesive paper, then top with another piece of self-adhesive paper. Use scissors to trim the paper around the leaves or flowers, punch a hole in the top, and thread a ribbon through.

Figure B
Figure B--Another great homemade Mother's Day gift is a decorated flowerpot. Children will have a great time decorating terra-cotta pots with pastel markers. Cover the pot with a base coat of acrylic paint first, if desired, then let it dry overnight. Use a pencil to draw a design on the flowerpot before coloring with the markers.

Figure D
Figure C--Flowers are great, but what about a beautiful vase for mom to put them in? Make her a decorative one, using a decoupage technique. Mix together 1/4 cup of white household glue with one tablespoon of water.

Figure D--Paint this mixture on a plain glass vase. Tear up several squares of multicolored tissue or wrapping paper and stick them on the vase, trying not to overlap the pieces too much. Paint another layer of the glue mixture over the tissue paper and let dry. The vase looks a bit like stained glass and can also double as a candleholder.

Figure E
Figure E--Here's an idea that literally has the family's fingerprints all over it. Make mom a decorated apron for Mother's Day and have fun with the children at the same time. Let the whole family dip their hands in different colors of fabric paint, then press their hands on a plain white apron. Write "Happy Mother's Day!" across the top.

Other Ideas

  • Make a candleholder out of a clean baby food jar. Decorate the outside of the jar with paint pens, fabric, ribbon, beads and wax crystals. Place a votive candle inside, and you're done.

  • Make mom a homemade milk-bath gift. Mix together one box of powdered milk with one box of scented bath powder. Place the mixture into large zipper bags, wrap in a decorative piece of fabric or a towel, and tie with ribbon.
