Here are some inspiring ideas to get children growing in the garden.
- Insert some seeds into a glass of gelatin. The moisture from the jello will germinate the seeds, and before you know, a plant will appear.
- Cut a paper towel into two or three long strips. Place seeds on one strip, cover with the other and place on a sheet of plastic wrap. This keeps the seeds nice and moist and creates a greenhouse effect. Take the wrapped seeds and place in a zippered plastic bag. In a couple of days the seeds will start to germinate. Once they do, take them out of the plastic bag along with the paper-towel wrapping and plant them in the backyard. This is a fun and successful way to get plants to germinate.
- Here's the best tip of all: Let children grow whatever they like. If it's watermelon, for example, have a seed-spitting contest in the garden and let melons spring up wherever the seeds may fall.
