Remember Mr. Bubble, The Campbell's Soup Kid, and Speedy Alka-Seltzer? Collector Ritchie Lucas does. He spends every day surrounded by his favorite advertising characters. He collects advertising toys and figures of the past and present.

His 900-piece collection started eight years ago because of a chance encounter with a childhood favorite, Mr. Bubble. He and his wife came up with an idea to display his collection in their advertising agency. With a little rearranging around the building, it didn't take the ad icons long to take over the suite.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • Advertising icons come in all shapes and sizes. A Tony the Tiger plastic cookie jar from 1968 can go for more than $70 and a pair of Campbell's Soup kids in colonial outfits from 1976 can go for more than $200.

  • A 1960s Speedy Alka-Seltzer eight-inch vinyl counter display in good condition can go for $500 or more.
