Lisa Roberts collects items that aren't yet collectibles. Everyday items such as dish soap, can openers, Swatch watches and toothbrushes are a few of the items displayed in her collection of more than 250 pieces. They are predominantly products designed by architects, industrial designers and graphic designers of everyday objects.

Sense of humor, whimsy and color are the characteristics that draw her to continue her collection of antiques of the future.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • Button watches made in 1991 are rising in value. They came in velvet-lined boxes with 15 loose buttons and a needle and thread. Today they can be worth more than $50 each.

  • A rare find would be a chair designed by Michele Lucchi in 1983 for the Memphis group. This chair has a big blue circle for a seat and two black balls as armrests. Originally selling for about $200 each, today they can be worth more than $700.
