Head to almost any beach when the surf is good and you're bound to see at least a few surfers riding the waves. Dick Metz, a collector from southern California, has created a life centered on surfing and a collection of surfboards. His collection is truly a historical documentation of the evolution of the board. If these boards \were sold at auction, they would range in price from $1,000 to $50,000. Interested in starting your own surfboard collection? Here are some quick tips.:

  • Be aware of cost. Redwood boards can cost up to $50,000, and foam boards range from $400 to $7,000

  • Look for boards that have been made or ridden by well-known surfers such as three-time Olympian Duke Kahanamoku. If you are buying a surfboard for historical significance, make sure its provenance can be documented.
