Tips: Crafty Photos

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-152 -- More Projects »
Photographing craft projects is not only a good way to show work to magazines for possible publication, but also it is an excellent idea for documenting craft work. Take the best photos by remembering a few simple rules of photography.
  • Always focus the picture. Most point and shoot type cameras feature automatic focus but have a limited focus range that doesn't allow clear photographs inside a three foot radius of the subject.
  • Be aware of shiny, reflective surfaces such as glass or glossy finishes. Avoid "flash flare" when photographing such items by not using a flash, and keep reflections out of the picture by taking the photo from a side angle.
  • Be aware of background when taking craft photos. Busy or distracting backgrounds won't help highlight the craft item. Make a photo backdrop by strategically placing fabric or construction paper behind and under the craft design. Neutral-toned, solid color backgrounds usually work best.
