Whether it's large, formal affairs or small, intimate gatherings, know what kind of entertaining you want to do before you plan for it.
Arrange to Entertain
Space is the key. Allow enough room for people to walk around freely. Don't be afraid to move furniture — whether it be to to create more space, provide more seating or inspire easy conversation. Your design should be flexible.
Use Color to Support Your Style
Think of how different colors make you feel and then choose the appropriate colors to reinforce the entertaining style or mood you want to establish in your home. Cooler colors like blues or greens set the tone for a more formal style, while warmer colors like yellow or taupe are for a more intimate, less-formal style. Organic colors such as tans, umber or terra cotta express a casual elegance, whereas bright, bold or primary colors just say fun!

Versatility. Think of your living areas and your furnishings as having more than one use. For example, how about using a breakfast nook to serve hors d'oeuvres? Or dining room chairs that match another room can double their duty.
