Figure A

  • Host a Sunday morning juice bar (figure A). Serve various types of juices, and add in a little continental breakfast--croissants, muffins and doughnuts with condiments such as butter, jelly and jams. Put fruit onto martini picks and serve.

  • How about an old-fashioned afternoon tea party? Fill a basket with several types of teas, coffees, cookies and napkins, allowing the items to spill over for a dramatic effect. This can easily be done in advance. The basket can even be a permanent display in your kitchen.

Figure B
  • Fill up the sink with ice and water to keep drinks cold (figure B).

  • Have a chili party and serve the chili in bowls made of bread. Just hollow out the insides of round loaves of bread and fill with chili. Guests can dip the bread into the chili as they go, then eat the bowl when the chili is gone.

  • Host an ice-cream sundae bar. You can either make your own ice cream or serve from store-bought cartons. Be sure to provide several types of toppings, including fruit, sprinkles and whipped cream.

    Figure C
  • Slice a large deli-style sandwich and tear off portions for guests. This is a great idea for a card-playing night. Just put the sandwich right in the middle of the table (figure C). It's easy, inexpensive and saves time.
