TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham offers her decorating ideas for a sports-themed party.
- Use the favorite team's colors to decorate the main room of the home with balloons and streamers.
- Green is a great tablecloth color because it looks like turf. Add a tennis or badminton net over that for an added touch.
- Other types of helmets can be used for the centerpiece. If they are slightly beat up or dirty, use a baking soda-and-water mixture to clean them. Also, try wrapping a slightly damaged hockey stick in crepe paper to cover any worn spots.
- If hockey is the sport of choice, use hockey pucks as coasters around the room. Use inexpensive plastic pucks, which are lighter.
Frost cupcakes with a variety of colors and place them inside a triangular pool rack (figure A).Foam matting from an art store works great for making ball-shaped place mats.
If it is a tennis, baseball, or golf-themed party, each sport's corresponding ball makes a great place card to set at each place (figure B). Use a napkin ring to hold each ball in place.Place a wastebasket underneath a miniature basketball hoop to encourage children to throw away their garbage.
