Norbert Wabnig from the Beverly Hills Cheese Store explains how easy it is to create a gourmet picnic basket for a romantic day out.
- A good basket is the best place to start. Picnic baskets equipped with silverware and plates can be expensive, but those that have plastic utensils can be found for approximately $30. A plain wicker basket with a decorative fabric or blanket always does the trick.
- Pack a few candles--at least one citronella candle to ward off insects.
- Ice packs keep items cold without getting everything wet. If you are planning a picnic for the next day, freeze a beverage in a plastic container that night and allow it to thaw as the day progresses for an ice-cold drink.
- Cheese is a must. Since this is a romantic setting, think about spending a little more for fewer items. Hard cheeses such as Parmesan, Emmentaler, cheddar and Gouda are flavorful and pack well. Soft cheeses such as Brie, Camembert and goat cheese are meant for immediate consumption, but are great to bring along if stored well.
- Salami packs well and goes great with cheese. There is a large variety, so simply choose according to your taste.
- Bread and crackers are next. The key here is to pick out several types of breads and crackers for a variety of flavors.
- Don't forget olives, vegetables and a vegetable dip.
- A romantic dessert can be as simple as strawberries, chocolate sauce and whipped cream!
