TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares some of her favorite tips for making homemade gifts.

  • Make bath salts. Mix together four cups Epsom salt with two cups sea salt. Add four to 10 drops of your choice of essential oil and a few drops of food coloring (figure A). Shake well and let sit in a closed zipper bag for two weeks. Shake at least once a day. Place salts in a decorative bottle or jar and that's it.

  • Wrap rope or colorful cord around a plain terra-cotta pot and adhere with a hot-glue gun. Be creative in the design of the rope (figure B).

  • Make little strawberry ornaments out of whole walnuts. Paint whole walnuts red, then glue on tiny pearls as the seeds. Attach a small felt leaf to the top of the walnut, followed by a hanger (figure C).
