Perhaps the ultimate way to create a stress-free holiday is to live by a list. Plan ahead, do as much ahead of time as possible, and don't be afraid to delegate.

"The more organized you can be, the better," says Kathy Gunst, culinary expert and author of Relax, Company's Coming! (Simon & Schuster, 2001) and co-author of Stonewall Kitchen Harvest (Clarkson Potter, 2005). "Soups and stews are the ultimate winter and holiday food -- they'll feed a crowd. Quiches and tarts also freeze well," and you don't have to make them from scratch, adds Gunst. "A sprinkle of fresh herbs over a store-bought crust will make all the difference."

And don't try to do it all yourself -- being organized also means delegating some jobs to friends and family. "Know what you're capable and comfortable doing and give other people things to do," advises Gunst. Asking guests to help with a party-related task makes them feel more involved, so never be afraid to ask.
