Field reporter Joe Lovitt visits with Bonnie Dehn of Dehn's Farm who shares some great ideas for creating beautiful holiday centerpieces out of natural materials.
Figure A--Arrange some small calico corn, gourds, bittersweet and pumpkins, plus some edible items like apples and nuts in a decorative basket. This makes a great display for the entryway or even a guest bathroom.
Figures B and C--Use hot glue or hook-and-loop tape to decorate napkin rings with dried wheat. Another way to spruce up napkin rings is by using hot glue to attach acorns, walnuts or almonds to the rings.
Figure D--Make festive floral displays with miniature pumpkins and squashes. Hollow out the gourds and fill with fresh flowers, wheat and rosemary. It may be necessary to trim a thin slice off the bottom of the gourds to make them sit up straight.
Figure E--Tie bunches of herbs, such as dried sage and rosemary, and herb flowers together with a string to make a garland that can be draped along a mantel or a table. Intersperse some dried corn as well. Here's a bonus tip: Some varieties of calico corn can be popped like popcorn. This is a fun surprise for the kids.
Figure F--Create unique place settings with clear glass plates and autumn leaves. Just sandwich some colored leaves between the glass plates.
