Particularly at Christmas, the fireplace becomes a very popular place. Whether you are using the mantel to hang stocking on or stoking the fire to keep warm, the fireplace becomes the hub of Christmas activity. With so many eyes focused on the fireplace, the mantel is one of the most important areas to decorate. Sally Cheney shows how to easily transform your mantel into a winter wonderland with this festive holiday mantel skirt.
Materials:
your choice of material
fusible fleece
iron
plate or round object
pen, disappearing ink works best
sewing machine
measuring tape
beads or trim of your choice
Steps:
- Begin by taking the measurements all the way around your mantel, including both sides and the front.
- Add one inch for a seam allowance, and cut your fabric accordingly.
- Iron on the fusible fleece to give it stability.
- Taking a plate, or some round object that is about as wide as one of the sides, draw a semi- circle on each end of the length of material.
- Work your way toward the center, drawing around the plate until you reach the middle. Repeat the same process with another piece of material.
- With the right sides together, stitch along the circle lines, creating scallop shapes.
- Trim along the circles, just outside of the scallops but close into the points. Set the side pieces aside.
- For the top, measure the top surface of the mantlel, and double the width. Add one inch plus the fusible fleece.
- Fold and stitch the sides together to form one thickness.
- Lay the scalloped edge over the top portion in an "L" to form the corner. Stitch and pivot the material.
- Once you have finished the corner, continue stitching the rest of the way down.
- To add trim, try stitching on beads, using a beading foot, or add other trim of your choice.
