Materials:
1/4" sheet of wood cut to desired shape of tray
1"-wide strip(s) of cardboard long enough to line the circumference of the tray
hot glue gun
newspaper
all-purpose flour
salt
warm water
large plastic bag
bowl
gesso
paint
varnish
brushes
Steps:
- Glue the strip of cardboard around the edge of the tray to make the sides of the tray.
- Tear the newspaper into 1"- to 2"-wide strips.
- Line the bowl with the plastic bag.
- Mix the papier-mache paste: 1 cup all-purpose flour, 2 Tbs. salt, and 1 1/2 cup warm water. Mix the paste inside the bag, and throw the mixture and the bag away when finished with the project. Do NOT pour the excess paste down the drain.
- Dip a strip of newspaper into the paste, wipe off any excess, and place the strip on the tray. Repeat the process with another strip, and let the second strip overlap half of the first strip when placing it on the tray.
- Repeat step 5 as many times as is necessary to cover the tray with three layers of newspaper strips. A preceding layer doesn't have to be dry before another layer is placed on top of it.
- Let the tray dry in an airy, sunny location.
- Prime the dry tray with gesso, paint as desired, and finish with a coat of varnish.
