Bead designer Jessica Lovett demonstrates the net-stitch beaded ornament for your Christmas tree.
Materials:
Nymo thread
needle (size 12 or 13 beading needle)
size 11-0 Japanese seed beads or Czech beads
Steps:
- Thread needle with one arm lengths of Nymo thread.
- Put 10 beads on Nymo and leave 12 inches at end of thread.
- Tie the beads into a circle and knot thread (figure A).
- Put five beads on needle.
- Thread needle through the second bead from knot on either side.
- Put five beads on needle, skip a bead and go through the second bead. Repeat until you get all the way around to the second bead from the knot, where you started. The beads should form a star when laid flat (figure B). Take the needle through the first star you made and come out of the tip bead.
- Pick up seven beads and go through the tip bead. You'll begin to recognize a pattern of always picking up beads and going through the tip bead. Repeat picking up seven beads and going through the tip beads.
- After circling around to the beginning point of sets of seven, bring the needle through the point of the first set of seven beads.
- Follow the same stitch pattern, but this time add nine beads on the needle each time, going completely around the snowflake.
- Follow the same stitch pattern, but this time add 13 beads on the needle each time, going completely around the snowflake.
- Finish off by threading several beads together at the top of the ornament; loop back down to the star tip. This is your hanging loop (figure C).
