Figure C
Maggie Oulette, owner of Maggie's Herbs, says that basil, parsley and chives are some of the best and easiest herbs to grow. Here's how:

Materials:

clay pot
gravel or broken clay pieces
potting-soil mix
1 tsp. lime
herbs of choice
food fertilizer

Steps:

  1. Starting with a clay pot, layer gravel or broken clay pieces in the bottom of the pot.

  2. Add potting-soil mix and one teaspoon of lime (figure A).

  3. Plant your herbs, leaving them plenty of room to grow (figure B). The herbs require watering when the top inch of soil is dry.

  4. Add all-purpose food fertilizer about once a month, and clip (figure C) or pick the herb leaves on a regular basis.

  5. Make sure that the roots aren't protruding from the bottom of the pot. If they are, transplant the herbs.
