Architect Greg Tate, pictured, explains how to make a sod sofa like this one for your lawn.
Architect Greg Tate demonstrates how to build a sod sofa for your lawn.

Choosing a Location

  • You need to make sure the sofa will be placed in a spot that gets some sunlight.

  • The area should be flat, smooth and weed free.

Building the Frame

The frame functions much like a mold. It will be filled with compressed dirt and eventually removed.

Materials:

2 sheets 4 x 8-foot wafer board
18 wood stakes, 1 x 3 x 48"
one 1 x 3 x 36"
1 flatbed pickup truck full of dirt (available at nurseries or construction sites; recycled construction fill was used for this project)
fertilizer
gypsum
sod tiles
scissors

Steps:

  1. Measure out the size and shape you want your sofa to be.

  • Water the dirt lightly and compress it by pushing (figure B) or stomping on it. Make sure the soil is good and compact.

  • Remove the form works (figure C).

  • Put down a fine layer of fertilizer to help the sod grow and establish the roots. Water again.

  • Sprinkle gypsum over the entire sofa form. It helps improve the fertilizer efficiency and irrigate the soil.

  • Lay down the sod tiles with some stagger so that all the ends are offset (figure D). Trim pieces to fill in blank spots or holes.

  • Even up the seams with scissors until the entire surface is covered with sod (figure E).
